Jewelry Cleaning and Maintenance isn't something that's always on our minds, but it's important for us to remember to do. We need to periodically check and clean our pieces in order to enjoy many years of use.
By bringing our treasured items in to a trusted jeweler, we are able to get them cleaned, but also have them checked. We want to make sure they are in the best condition possible. They will make sure all stones are tight, check all prongs and check for any weak spots. It's better to have special items like your bridal jewelry checked every six months, just to be on the safe side.  If you are getting them checked, there is less of a chance of losing a stone due to damage. It will save you the heartbreak and the hassle. Also, if you have your jewelry insured, most insurance companies require you to have them checked on a regular basis for the coverage to be valid. It's common for all jewelry to show general signs of wear with regular use, it doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. Just be sure not to wear your items in the pool or hot tub.  The chemicals that are used can be damaging.  It's best not to wear them while jewelry cleaning with harsh chemicals either.  Also, avoid wearing them while sleeping and showering.  Lastly, hair products can be rough on your jewelry too.  Keep in mind, when getting dressed, jewelry should be the last thing you put on  to get ready.
I know it sounds like a lot of fuss, but once you get in the habit,  it really is not that bad.  Always make sure when you take your special items off, you keep them in a safe place.  Get into the habit of putting them in the same place every time.  If you designate one place, it's easier to remember to use it every time. If you keep sterling silver jewelry in a sealed plastic bag, it may tarnish less.  It doesn't tarnish when your wearing it, just when you're not.
